The opportunity to obtain health insurance through the federal marketplace begins
November 1, 2023 and runs through January 15, 2024.
If you want to change or acquire new health insurance consistent with the Affordable
Care Act of 2010, this can be done by going to the HealthCare.gov website.
This health insurance is a good option for people who are self-employed or unemployed
or do not have health insurance offered through their workplace. People who qualify for
Medicare of Medicaid are not eligible for health insurance through the exchange.
Many people enrolled through the public marketplace receive subsidies (in the form of
tax credits) that lower the cost of premiums. Some people also qualify for help with
cost-sharing on deductibles and copays, depending on the selected plan and the
person’s income.
Premiums are likely to rise next year in most places by 4-5%, but subsidies were
extended through 2025 by the Inflation Reduction Act and there is no income cap
regarding qualifying for these. Income is required to be estimated by the applicant, and
it is important that the estimate be as accurate as possible in order to avoid any
penalties or problems.
