New Laws In Washington Starting July 2023

There are a host of new laws that take effect this month. None of them are automobile related, but
some may be of interest to you.

1). DEATH WITH DIGNITY ACT: The 2008 law has been amended to allow access to providers who
have authorization to assist to now include advanced registered nurse practitioners and
physician assistants. The new law allows the medication used in the process to be mailed and
eliminates waiting periods after medication is requested.

2). ADDRESSING THE FENTANYL CRISIS: The legislature has made the purchase sale of possession
of pill presses to be a class C felony.

3). LANDLORD’S CLAIMS FOR DAMAGES: This law extends the landlord time frame for providing
documentation of the reasons showing why a security deposit has been retained. The law also
limits the specific items that can been included as part of a security deposit due to normal wear
and tear.

4). RUNAWAY YOUTH SERVICES: This bill provides a methodology for determining whether or not a
runaway youth’s parents need to be notified of the youth’s staying at a shelter as well as helping
to determine what the state’s duties are for intervention in the situation where the youth is
fleeing abuse or neglect.

5). CREATION OF PSILOCYBIN TASK FORCE: a group has been created to review research
surrounding psilocybin and provide a report to the governor regarding same.

6).INCREASING ACCESS TO ADUS: This bill seeks to make it easier for urban residents to navigate
the rules for and implement the building of an additional dwelling unit on their single-family
residential land.
