AUTOMATED CAMERAS TO MONITOR CONSTRUCTION ZONES ON HIGHWAYS FOR SPEEDERS

A new law passed in May, 2023 will allow the Department of Transportation to install and use speed cameras in construction zones to catch speeders.  Tickets would then be mailed to offenders.

The law was passed after a Washington Traffic Safety Commission report found that 28 people had died in work zones in the last three years.  It was estimated that 20% of the injuries were the result of speeding.

The fines for speeding in work zones will vary depending upon the degree of the infraction.  New cameras are expected to be installed during 2024.
